About the Project
The proposed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility at Port Adelaide will take under-utilised forestry biomass and convert it into fuel that be used in existing aircraft without modification.
The facility combines two proven process technologies at one location.
- Biomass-to-Methanol: Converts forestry residues to methanol
- Methanol-to-Jet: Converts methanol into SAF
Under-utilised forestry biomass is supplied by HAMR Energy's Green Triangle Biohub, where 600,000 green tonnes of forestry biomass are aggregated and processed each year before being transported to Port Adelaide. The SAF Energy Park will produce 140 million litres of SAF per year. This is equivalent to decarbonising approximately 3.5 million economy-class passenger trips from Sydney to Melbourne.
Project Timeline
The SAF Energy Park has completed feasibility and is now in early front-end engineering design (FEED) with technology partners thyssenkrupp Uhde and Honeywell UOP. A Final Investment Decision is targeted for 2028, with first production expected in 2031.
The Location
The SAF Energy Park is located at Port Adelaide, South Australia. The site combines deep-water port access for inbound feedstock and outbound product with proximity to an established industrial workforce, existing fuel distribution infrastructure and South Australia's renewable energy resources.
Torrefied biomass arrives linking the Green Triangle's forestry resource directly to South Australian fuel production.

HAMR Energy is committed to early, open and ongoing engagement as the SAF Energy Park progresses through planning, assessment, construction and operation. We recognise the importance of listening to local communities, Traditional Owners, businesses, industry partners and government stakeholders and ensuring their feedback helps inform the project.
Our engagement program is designed to provide clear information about the project, answer questions, and give people meaningful opportunities to share their views. Engagement activities will include stakeholder briefings, community information sessions, project updates, direct communications and opportunities to provide feedback throughout the planning and approvals process.
As part of the development assessment process, HAMR Energy will undertake formal public consultation, with all feedback considered alongside technical studies and specialist assessments. We are committed to reporting back to the community on what we heard and how feedback has been considered.
The project will also include dedicated engagement with First Nations stakeholders to ensure Aboriginal cultural heritage, values and opportunities are appropriately recognised and considered.
