About Project
The SAF Energy Park is the conversion heart of Project Shearwater, a single integrated site at Port Adelaide, South Australia, that takes pre-processed forestry biomass and turns it into drop-in sustainable aviation fuel.
The facility combines two proven process technologies on one footprint. Biomass-to-Methanol (BtM), delivered with thyssenkrupp Uhde, gasifies torrefied forestry residue and synthesises it into 300,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol per year. That methanol is then upgraded on site through Honeywell UOP's Methanol-to-Jet (MtJ) technology into 140 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel annually, alongside co-products such as renewable diesel.
Feedstock is supplied by HAMR Energy's Myamyn BioHub in Victoria's Green Triangle, where 600,000 green tonnes of forestry residue are torrefied each year before being shipped from the Port of Portland to Port Adelaide.
Co-locating both conversion steps removes an entire methanol shipping leg from the supply chain, reduces handling losses and capital duplication, and gives HAMR Energy end-to-end control of the pathway from forestry residue to certified jet fuel.
140 million litres of SAF a year is equivalent to decarbonising approximately 3.5 million economy-class passenger trips from Sydney to Melbourne, a meaningful contribution against the projected 10-million-tonne global SAF supply shortfall from 2030.
HAMR Energy completed a successful feasibility study for the facility in 2025, identifying the Methanol-to-Jet pathway as the most scalable route to closing that shortfall.

The SAF Energy Park is being developed in partnership with the aviation industry it serves. Qantas has committed to offtake from the facility, and Airbus is backing the project, together anchoring demand for Australian-made sustainable aviation fuel.
The Location
The SAF Energy Park is located at Port Adelaide, South Australia. The site combines deep-water port access for inbound feedstock and outbound product with proximity to an established industrial workforce, existing fuel distribution infrastructure and South Australia's renewable energy resources.
Torrefied biomass arrives by sea from the Port of Portland, Victoria, linking the Green Triangle's forestry resource directly to South Australian fuel production.
