PROJECT SHEARWATER
Green Triangle BioHub
Green Triangle, Victoria
A dedicated biomass pre-processing facility in Victoria's Green Triangle, converting underutilised forestry biomass into a dry, energy-dense feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production.

About the Project
The Green Triangle BioHub is the first stage of Project Shearwater, HAMR Energy’s flagship project.
The BioHub will process up to 600,000 tonnes of forestry biomass each year, sourced from the Green Triangle. Using torrefaction, the biomass will be converted into a dry, energy-dense material that can be efficiently transported to the next stage of the project. The processed biomass will be transported to HAMR Energy’s SAF Energy Park in Port Adelaide, where it will be used to produce low-carbon methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Feedstock Supply
The BioHub is located in Victoria's Green Triangle, the heart of Australia's largest sustainable plantation forestry region. Siting the facility within the resource catchment shortens the supply chain and allows the project to draw on an established industrial workforce, road and rail infrastructure and a mature forestry supply base.
Making better use of forestry biomass
The project will create a new use for forestry biomass that is generated through normal plantation harvesting and management. This provides an opportunity to make better use of existing resources without competing with food production or high-value timber products.
Making transport more efficient
Forestry biomass contains a significant amount of moisture, which adds weight when it is transported. At the BioHub, the biomass will undergo torrefaction, a controlled heating process that removes moisture and creates a dry, energy-dense material. This means more of each tonne transported is useful biomass, improving the efficiency of transportation to the SAF Energy Park.
Project Timeline
Technical Assessments
As part of the approvals process for the BioHub, HAMR Energy will commission a series of independent technical and environmental assessments. These will be undertaken as the project progresses through FEED and are expected to include:
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
HAMR Energy is committed to working openly and respectfully with neighbours, the local community, Traditional Owners and stakeholders. As the project progresses through engineering, design and environmental assessments and approvals, HAMR Energy will provide information and opportunities for stakeholders to better understand the project, ask questions and provide feedback at appropriate stages.
HAMR Energy acknowledges the Gunditjmara people as the Traditional Owners of the Country on which the BioHub will be built, and pays respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
Have a question about the BioHub, feedback to share or want to hear about upcoming community sessions? Send us a message and the project team will get back to you.
Local Jobs and Opportunities
The BioHub has the potential to introduce new jobs, support local businesses and build skills in the Green Triangle. The project would create opportunities across construction, operations, maintenance, transport, and supporting services, with the potential to draw on the region's existing workforce and skills.
Where possible, HAMR Energy will work with local businesses, suppliers and training providers to maximise local participation and build capability in the region.
