PROJECT SHEARWATER

SAF Energy Park

Port Adelaide, South Australia

Located at Port Adelaide, South Australia, the SAF Energy Park will convert pre-processed under-utilised forestry biomass into low-carbon methanol and upgrade it on site into sustainable aviation fuel.

About the Project

About the Project

The SAF Energy Park is the main component of Project Shearwater, a single integrated site at Port Adelaide, South Australia, that takes pre-processed forestry biomass from the Biohub and turns it into drop-in sustainable aviation fuel.

The facility combines two proven process technologies on one footprint. Biomass-to-Methanol (BtM), delivered with thyssenkrupp Uhde, gasifies torrefied under-utilised forestry biomass and synthesises it into 300,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol per year. That methanol is then upgraded on site through Honeywell UOP's Methanol-to-Jet (MtJ) technology into 140 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel annually.

Feedstock is supplied by HAMR Energy's Biohub in Victoria's Green Triangle, where 600,000 green tonnes of under-utilised forestry biomass are torrefied each year before being transported from the Port of Portland to Port Adelaide.

140 million litres of SAF a year is equivalent to decarbonising approximately 3.5 million economy-class passenger trips from Sydney to Melbourne, a meaningful contribution against the projected 10-million-tonne global SAF supply shortfall from 2030.

HAMR Energy completed a successful feasibility study for the facility in 2025, identifying the Methanol-to-Jet pathway as the most scalable route to closing that shortfall.

HAMR is seeking experienced EPC and consortium partners for the SAF Energy Park.

Project Timeline

Project Timeline

The SAF Energy Park has completed feasibility and is now in early front-end engineering design (FEED) with technology partners thyssenkrupp Uhde and Honeywell UOP. A Final Investment Decision is targeted for 2028, with first production expected in 2031.

The SAF Energy Park integrates two of the world's most trusted names in process technology, one for each half of the conversion pathway, to ensure financial bankability and operational reliability.

thyssenkrupp Uhde

thyssenkrupp Uhde provides the integrated biomass-to-methanol solution, featuring proprietary PRENFLO gasification and uhde green methanol technology. It converts torrefied under-utilised forestry biomass into 300,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol per year.

Honeywell UOP

Honeywell UOP is the global process-technology arm of Honeywell, a 100-year leader in refining and petrochemical technologies. Honeywell UOP delivers the commercial methanol-to-jet eFining solution that makes large-scale, certified SAF possible.

The Location

The SAF Energy Park is located at Port Adelaide, South Australia. The site combines deep-water port access for inbound feedstock and outbound product with proximity to an established industrial workforce, existing fuel distribution infrastructure and South Australia's renewable energy resources.

Torrefied biomass arrives by sea from the Port of Portland, Victoria, linking the Green Triangle's forestry resource directly to South Australian fuel production.
